This is my favorite of Amy Tan's books that I have read so far. The main thing I liked was that most of it took place in the past. In a country and within boundaries of behavior that are both foreign to me and yet completely understandable. I was expecting another story of a US-born child struggling to get along with her old-world mother. And yet this was something much deeper than that.
