Virgin

Virgin: The Untouched History
by Hanne Blank
276 p

Social history of how virginity has been viewed by societies in the past and today. Greek, Roman, Jewish, early Christian, up to today in the US and around the world. Favorite quote, p17: "A woman's sexual choices now include, in ways that have not historically been the case, the option to decline." Definitely should have been a longer book. C'est la vie. As it is, interesting overview of the subject. And I learned from carrying this book around that the word 'virgin' will invariably cause a reaction. Some people will comment and ask questions, while others will ignore. Some of the same people who ask about every other book I read ignored this one once they saw the cover. So it is a relevant topis for us all, even today, not just for a social historian.
