Roxana

Roxana
By Daniel Defoe

Beautiful! Ends abruptly, my theory is the author fell a little in love with Roxana and couldn't bear to see her downfall.

Short stories. Liked most of them, didn't understand the last one.

Horse racing- always good. Knew partly how it would end, but good anyway!

The Notebook

The Notebook
By Nicolas Sparks

Not as good as I've been led to believe by all the media hype, shockingly enough! But much better than Bridges of Madison County, which had similar hype.

The Red Garden

The Red Garden
By Alice Hoffman

Amazing book. Beautifully written, the connections are there between the generations even when it doesn't seem like it. Sad more than happy, but overall not a sad book. Uplifting.

Stonehenge Decoded

Stonehenge Decoded
By Gerald S. Hawkins
190p

Very interesting. I let some of the calculations go over my head because I wasn't that concerned about the particulars, not being a mathmetician and all! Still, the theories are interesting and I like that he admitted when he was wrong. (The one that comes to mind is when he dismissed some holes as unimportant only to later find out they may have had a purpose.)

A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember
By Nicolas Sparks
0446608955 240p

Of course I've seen the movie, which has much more happening because this book is so short. Parts of it, I liked the movie version better. And parts I liked this book better. Like, I understand why they changed the play, but the play in the book makes much more sense.

The Necklace

The Necklace
By Cheryl Jarvis

Very short. Interesting how they ended up using the necklace for charity. I don't really understand the allure of diamonds, so some of the arguments and stories made me roll my eyes. The hushed voices and tears when a woman gets to wear it for a few hours, I didn't understand at all. But I have friends who I'm sure would totally "get it"!

Two books in one: Summer Desserts and Lessons Learned. Both about food, two great main characters and their love interests were fun too!

Letters to Juliet

Letters to Juliet
By Lise Friedman and Ceil Friedman
174p

Just watched the movie, so of course I had to read the book! Very cool hobby that these women and men have. I'm not a huge fan of Juliet, or of Romeo and Juliet in general, but I can still appreciate the connection some people feel with her.

Absolutely intriguing concept! And very well-done. Not too sweet or syrupy, yet I still cried at the end.

I like V's documentary thing, great way to show what people are thinking- eavesdropping on their therapy sessions, basically! J+S are fun together.

When the Astors Owned New York

When the Astors Owned New York
By Justin Kaplan

Disjointed. Interesting, but too many names that were the same, with no real personalities coming through to distinguish them from one another.
